Veterans Services Program
Phone: 782-200-7640
Shelter Nova Scotia’s Veterans Services Program supports former members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), including Rangers and reservists, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), who are experiencing homelessness or are at imminent risk of homelessness.
The program has an important homelessness prevention focus. Its goal is to intervene early, help veterans overcome barriers to housing, prevent people from losing their homes, and support those experiencing homelessness in moving into permanent housing.
Through specialized case management, the program's Intensive Case Managers – Veterans Services work directly with participants to understand their circumstances, identify their needs and develop individualized plans. Support can include rental assistance, other material supports, eviction prevention, housing searches, referrals, help navigating services and connections to veteran-serving organizations. Trusteeship referrals and other community supports may also be coordinated where appropriate.
The program is delivered through Shelter Nova Scotia's broader commitment to treating people with dignity and respect, without judgement. Support is client-directed, strengths-based and culturally aware. Military experience is not required of the case managers; their role is to provide informed, individualized support and help veterans access the resources available to them.
